This is a 1999 Dodge Neon Sport I bought on January 18, 2006. Since my sister's AW11 got sandwiched and my dad rolling his 4runner over we lost two cars. Leaving almost each person in my house with only 1 car to drive and me to drive nothing if everyone is using them if both of my cars are down. At this time having something for just me to drive is very uncertain because the Eclipse won't pass smog so its engine is being rebuilt and my Z breaks something everytime I drive it. I wanted to find a car that everyone in my family could drive (unfortunately my mom can't or should I say won't drive a manual), gets good gas mileage, a sedan, and has some decent power and handling. My mom wanted a Civic but I couldn't find any for as good a price as a Neon, the neon has the same engine as the Eclipse the 420A so it was a familiar engine for me to work with. The Neon is said to get up to 30-40 miles per gallon as well. I found a 99 Neon Highline ad on Craigslist after having browsed for months looking for a decent one for a cheap price it was practically around the corner too. I found it, apparently the family was using it to commute from Fresno and they were going to give it to their son but he had bought a new Mustang instead. It was a Neon Sport also not a Highline it was actually better than a Highline. It has the touring suspension and 14 inch rims. 99 is good also because its newer obviously it has more of the bugs fixed, it has OBDII so it'll be easier to diagnose problems, and 98+ neon came with the MLS (Multi Layer Steel) headgasket, which pretty much means the headgasket will never blow which is a common problem with neons ^_^. It had a salvage title because the previous owner before them had a frontal collision. I can tell because the hood and one fender seem to be repainted. There's a battlescar on the rear passenger door also. The headlight are rediculously off alignment one point really high and the other points really low like it was a fog light. Speaking of fog lights this model was suppose to come with them and it has a button so I guess when they replaced the front bumper they didn't didn't reinstall the foglights. It has a sunroof too but it doesn't open. As for how the car runs it ran great when I test drove it. But when I took it home it was 3 quarts low on oil!!! Apparently from the time they bought it and the time it got to my hands they were driving it. The reservoir was low on coolant and the brake fluid reservoir was slightly low. Couple bulbs were popped too. Other than that it runs great, it has good power and good handling despite the econo tires. Then I have to smog it too. I heard these pass smog pretty easily unless someone like me touches it like I touched my eclipse. I'm going to do a good tune up and go for a pretest and see what it gets. I'm pretty sure it'll pass smog but you never know though, I can't gauge how well the mileage is yet either I need to fill the tank and drive it and fill it again. But it was low on fuel when we bought and we put about 5 gallon in it and the needle went half way from empty so its probably got a small tank. The timing belt seems a bit loose too compared to my eclipse I hope the tensioner isn't giving out. Its only got 80,000 miles on it Oh yes and when I popped the hood for the first time to my surprise it was a DOHC 420A!!! I was kinda leaning towards the SOHC because it has more torque and saves some gas I think but oh well can't hurt to have some performance in a beater. For 1600 dollars if the car passes smog after a tune up its all good. The guy wanted 1900 for it originally but the tags are expired and it had a check engine light when I test drove it. For some odd reason when I took it home though the check engine light disappeared, another reason we had for lowering it was because it wasn't smogged either. My plans for this car are to fix it up and maintain it and drive it. Will do light upgrades like spark plug wires, free mods, and maybe a coil pack upgrade. Shocks are still good so won't really touch the suspension. Might get some alloy wheels for the car, I'll see what I can find at the junkyard but that won't happen until the econo tires are gone. All I have to do is keep it running good and keeping it as stock as possible and look stock as possible so as to keep it unattractive to thieves. Who knows maybe I'll find goodies for it in the junkyards I see lotsa neons in the yard maybe find a stock painted hood and fender I don't see that midnight purple there though.
